Nepal is among the most beautiful and majestic places in the world: home to the great Himalayan Range and a wealth of ancient history. At the same time, landlocked Nepal also presents one of the great socioeconomic tragedies of the modern era, sometimes referred to as a “fifth world” or “pre-developing” country. However, growing on the foothills of these great mountains are the seeds of hope of an emerging specialty coffee origin.
In the Nuwakot District below the Ganesh Himalaya, Mingma Tenzing Sherpa, whose grandfather served the historic 1953 Everest Expedition, grows heirloom Typica, Bourbon and Caturra trees on the 25-acre Lekali (“Highland” in Nepali) Estate. He cultivates world class specialty coffee, bringing passion and vision to his Nepali coffee community as a true pioneer and harbinger of quality and sustainability. This truly unique terroir represents the best of Nepal and produces a wildly unique flavor profile despite sitting well north of the Tropic of Cancer, the traditional boundary for conventional coffee growing.
