Melanie Herrera is producing one of the most exciting small lots on Vulcan de Agua. Her spread of classic varieties on classic terroir makes for a highly coveted coffee from a world class agronomist and seasoned coffee veteran driven by passion and youth. Her plot is situated high up the volcano with the classic ashy soils of the extinct volcano but with cooler temperatures and more cloud cover at 1880m that offer sweet notes of cocoa and vanilla with orange peel.

This is a perfect paradox of specialty coffee that motivates us and draws us deeper into our mission. In one sense this is one of many everyday “Hunapu” small lot coffees on the volcano supported and marketed by our partners at Beneficio Bella Vista like Don Guayo. On the other hand, Altamira is produced by a trained agronomist, leader, marketer and relationship manager for Bella Vista! Melanie purchased this farm to be closer to the producers she represents and to share their struggles toward demonstrating how to struggle well in producing higher quality and higher yields. She is not just a teacher or a buyer with something to gain but a fellow producer facing the same challenges and rewards. We count ourselves as fortunate to be able to share this coffee and this journey with Melanie and the future of the Hunapu producers!
